If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please send an email to flatirons@flatironsphotoclub.org with the subject line ‘Mailing list’.
Our speaker for the meeting will be Russ Burden, who will give a two part presentation titled, “The Serenity of the Serengeti.” The first part is an instructional Keynote slide show that shows the techniques Russ uses to capture his wildlife and scenic images while he is in Tanzania. Some of the concepts he will share are lens choice, flash, other photo gear, the quality of light, and how background choice impacts the quality of the photo. A few other topics include exhausting all possibilities, how to capture peak action, how to create bold silhouettes, timing, and more. Russ will show examples of photos that illustrate all of the above concepts. Part 2 is a 20 minute offering of Russ’s safari photos set to music. Part 2 immediately follows the instructional section.
BIO: Russ Burden is the owner of Russ Burden Nature Photography Tours. He runs wildlife workshops in addition to safaris to Tanzania three times a year. He is internationally published and his commercial work is marketed through Getty Images. Russ has been writing the Tip of the Week for the Outdoor Photographer website for years. He has hundreds of tips archived on their website. Russ is a multiple time winner of the prestigious Nature’s Best Windland Smith Rice Award in many categories in addition to having numerous safari photos honored and hung in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC and the Iziko Museum in South Africa. Russ has been published numerous times in Outdoor Photographer and his wildlife and scenic images have appeared in calendars published by Self Realization Fellowship, Kodak, Audubon, Sierra Club, National Wildlife, National Geographic Traveler, and more. Russ has an incredible passion for photography and seeks to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with all his workshop participants. His drive to seek optimal light and composition motivates him to create the perfect image. His energy and commitment to photography are contagious and it’s his goal to help others get to this point in their pursuit of our wonderful art.
This is a collection of images that have received awards at Club meetings since December 2010, plus a few images from presenters and other sources. Click on an image to start a slide show, and on a keyboard use the right arrow to advance. We hope this is a pleasant distraction from current events, and an opportunity to remember past competition winners. Please email any comments to flatirons@flatironsphotoclub.org, subject line “Past Winners”.

Members: Please note that there will not be a competition for the March meeting, to allow full time for Winn Robbin’s presentation on portrait photography.
Join Portrait Photographer Winn Robbins and Model Aileen Vega at Mike’s Camera in Boulder on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at 7:00 PM for a fun evening of portrait photography live shooting. Learn from two working professionals as you watch a shoot happen from start to finish. Using a single light and multiple backgrounds, both photographer and model will interact and shoot together, demonstrating how to create various lighting profiles and looks, combine them with beautiful poses, all to bring a perfect portrait to life. You will learn model direction and pose creation, light diffusion and sizing, how to flatter your subject with your light, how different lenses can react to different subjects, and much more.
Winn Robbins is an editorial portrait photographer based in Boulder, CO. With ten years of experience in wedding, photojournalism and portrait photography, he offers unique insights on the ins and outs of the photographic industry. He also specializes in monochromatic and art photography, bringing an artistic technique to many of his classes and challenging attendees to think outside the box as they create images of their own. For more information on Winn and to see his work and follow his blog, visit www.winslowrobbins.com.
Club members: If you haven’t yet paid your 2020 membership dues ($20 individual/$25 family), you can pay them at the February meeting. Thanks!
Dustin Doskocil will speak at the Flatirons Photo Club on Thursday, February 13 at Mike’s Camera on Boulder. Dustin will be talking about how he works photographically on location. Afterwards, he’ll outline his workflow with Lightroom and Photoshop to create his special imagery.
Dustin Doskocil is a photographer, problem solver, angler, paddler, camper, road tripper, hiker, camper, cyclist, snowshoer, snowboarder but most of all he’s an adventure seeker. While always looking to see what’s around the bend or over the next ridge, he finds himself in some pretty amazing places surrounded by interesting people, eating good food and always with his camera at the ready. Based out of Colorado, with roots in Texas, Dustin has knowledge and access to a vast array of beautiful landscapes and honey holes.
Born and raised in Arlington, TX Dustin would carry a point and shoot camera around with him documenting his friends goofing off and having fun. He took a photo class in high school but it wasn’t until college that he found a passion for taking photos. He graduated with a degree in Advertising and Fashion Photography and went on to assist and learned from some of the best photographers in Dallas and from around the world. Honing in on his passion for photography, Dustin started building a portfolio and shooting assignments for newspapers, magazines and businesses from around North America.
Dustin has photographed everything from corporate events and weddings to food and portraits and enjoys every photographic opportunity he gets. His favorite assignments are shooting people doing what they love to do. This led him in the direction of shooting editorial, advertising and portrait assignments in the outdoor industry as well as the corporate world.

Photography has been a 50 year experiment for me. Each time I acquired a new lens, format or film, it was time to see everything in a new way. Panorama, pinhole, stereo, or infrared, they all encouraged me to consider a new vision.
Life changed in 1981 when I was hired to build a photographic studio and darkroom at the University of Texas Humanities Research Center in Austin. The collections include 7 million images dating from the first photo by Nicéphore Niépce in 1826. Crafting exhibition prints from the original plates and negatives was my education. Seeing the vision of the masters was my guide.
Commercial work included documentation of the restoration of the Texas Capitol and Governor’s mansion. Exhibition prints for the LBJ library, rare book catalogs, photo services for the fine arts community and environmental preservation.
I hope to encourage photographers (and all artists) to experiment and grow in new and different directions.
