December 2022 Annual Competition – In-person and via Zoom

Please join us for our 2022 Annual Competition, which will be held both in-person and via Zoom, on December 8 at 7:00 PM

The in-person meeting will be held in the theater at Frasier Retirement Community. The address is 350 Ponca Place, Boulder. We must check-in at the main reception desk at Frasier before proceeding to the theater. Masks are required.

A Zoom link to the October meeting will be sent in advance via email to members and interested non-members. If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please send an email to flatirons[at]flatironsphotoclub.org with the subject line ‘Mailing list’.

Please come early to socialize. We will start promptly at 7pm.

The judge for the competition will be Stephen Collector. He is a long-time professional photographer and author based in the Boulder area. His work can be seen at stephencollector.com.

This will be a totally digital competition (no prints). You must be a member to submit images. A maximum of 3 images are allowed. They may be all in one category, or distributed among any of the categories

There are 4 categories for the annual competition (Note that there is no Special Topic for this meeting!):

  • Nature
  • Other Realism
  • Special Effects
  • Black & white

The deadline for submittal is noon on Monday, Dec 5. This is a strict deadline to allow for advance review of the images by our judge. Late submittals may not be included in the competition.

November 2022 Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)

We will again meet via Zoom in November, due to scheduling issues. The meeting is Thursday, November 10 at 7pm. Join early to socialize. Our November presenter, Greg Holden, is a photographer based in Denver https://www.imagesunderfoot.com/about-us/. He will present a program called “Pairings”. Greg hopes this presentation inspires you to investigate your own portfolio and to discover common threads in your style.

Greg will do a critique of member images in the 2nd half of the program. Please use the process found on our website to submit your images: https://flatironsphotoclub.org/monthly-members-competition.

Every dues-paying member may share up to 2 images for the critique. Please also submit your images to [email protected] by noon on Monday the 8th.

We have photographers of all abilities in the club and all of us have been beginners and shy about sharing our pictures. So members, one and all, please plan to share. We want to see your work.

October 2022 Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)

Just like that, it’s fall!

Our next meeting is Thursday, October 13 at 7pm. One more Zoom meeting – join early to socialize. We’re aiming to start in person meetings in November. The October meeting will be a members’ meeting. Every dues-paying member may share up to 2 images for group feedback. We will do a share screen from members’ computers rather than project them as we do for competition, but if you need that help from Peter, submit your images to him by noon on Monday. We won’t need to categorize the images, but if you are looking for a theme our October special topic is Landmarks.

We have photographers of all abilities in the club and all of us have been beginners and shy about sharing our pictures. So members, one and all, please plan to share. We want to see your work.

This meeting will be a Members Night, with presentations by selected members on a number of subjects. We look forward to ‘seeing’ you then!

May 2022 Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)

Our presenter will be Court Whelan, a expedition leader and a professional photographer who has a specialty in conservation travel. He will present a program on travel photography, just in time for our summer break. Take a look at his portfolio at his website: https://www.courtwhelan.com/.

For the second hour of our meeting, Court will be the judge of a monthly competition. As has been our practice, each member may submit up to 2 images in any of the 4 categories, Nature, Realism, Special Effects, or Special Topic. Only members may participate in the competition. The deadline to submit images is Monday, May 9th at noon.

March 2022 Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)

Our presenter will be Daniel Gregory, who is a fine-art photographer and photographic educator. He resides on beautiful Whidbey Island just north of Seattle, Washington where he runs Silly Dog Studios with his partner Lori, an herbalist. In addition to co-running the studio, he is a core faculty member of the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle. Daniel also hosts a weekly podcast called The Perceptive Photographer, which focuses on the challenges and day-to-day aspects of living as a photographer. You can find his classes on CreativeLive, KelbyOne, and various in-person and online conferences and workshops.

His current work focuses on our relationships to time and place attempting to understand how we connect in meaningful ways to places and people of importance. You can view his portfolio, see his blog and learn about his podcast on his website: https://www.danieljgregory.com/.

February 2022 Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)

Our February meeting on Thursday, February 10th, will be held via Zoom starting at 7:00 PM MST.

Our presenter will be Carol Walker, a wildlife photographer who specializes in wild horses. She will present a program on wild horses. See more about her at her website:

We will hold a competition. Carol will critique and score images according to our regular categories and the special topic “character studies”. Members may submit up to two images. We encourage all members to participate. It’s a great opportunity to learn.

January 2022 Monthly Meeting (via Zoom)

Our next monthly meeting is on Thursday, January 13, starting at 7 PM via Zoom. This meeting will be a member critique. Join a bit early to assure your connectivity and socialize. A link to the meeting will be sent in advance via email to members and interested non-members. Each member may submit up to 2 images to share and talk about and to receive member feedback. Details of the submittal requirements are at this link. The deadline to submit your images is Monday the 10th at noon.. The special topic is ‘Shooting through a surface (like steamy glass or other translucent material)’. (A list of special topics for 2022 is at https://flatironsphotoclub.org/competition-special-topics.) Images will be shown individually and not categorized into topics and of course, no awards. Just a lot of talk about pictures.

We encourage all members to participate. It’s a great opportunity totalk about our work and learn from each other.

Flatirons Photo Club Annual Competition and Meeting (via Zoom)

As is our tradition, we will have an annual competition at our December meeting on Thursday, December 9 at 7 PM (held via Zoom). Members will submit their best work for us to see. The judge this year will be Rob Lantz, photographer and owner of R Gallery.
