Dana Bove will be our speaker. Dana is a long time Boulder, Colorado resident and is President and founder of Front Range Nesting Bald Eagle Studies (FRNBES). Dana traded his love for research as a career geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) for studies on nesting and winter roosting Bald Eagles and other raptors in the northern Colorado Front Range. A passion for photography, raptors, environmental conservation, and scientific research provide the foundation for his current studies of Bald Eagle and other raptors.

Dana will discuss general characteristics of the region’s Bald Eagles with a focus on breeding populations. In addition, he will share how photography has become one of the foundational tools for his research and related conservation and advocacy work. In the northern Colorado Front Range there are now about eighteen Bald Eagle nests, significantly more than existed several decades ago. Yet nest density appears to be leveling off: since 2014 the number of successful nests in our study area has only grown by two or perhaps three nests. Nesting Bald Eagles face many challenges that will make it much more difficult for them to sustain their large near-nest territories, and which are already bringing Bald Eagles into more frequent conflict with agriculture, housing construction and oil and gas development.

The second half of the meeting will be a member critique. Members may submit up to 2 images. Use the naming protocols outlined on in our submittal guidelines: https://flatironsphotoclub.org/monthly-members-competition. This month the special topic is “animals in any environment”.
